The cost of catalytic convertor thefts
One of our prime insurer partners, Aviva, has reported a large rise in catalytic convertor thefts, coinciding with recent increases in the value of precious metals.
Aviva report:
'With precious metals prices now standing at an all time high, coupled with the cost of replacing a catalytic convertor in a private diesel car now standing at about £2,500, and the continuing rise in diesel models, the theft of catalytic convertors has had an increasing impact on claims costs.
Catalytic convertor thefts can affect anyone who owns a vehicle but motor traders are often targeted because their vehicles sit on a forecourt. Exclusive housing developments, where 4x4 style vehicles are more common, are also susceptible to theft because the vehicles higher ground clearance makes the catalytic convertors easier to access.'
We have also seen reports advising that motor homes had also been targeted of late for similar reasons as 4x4's. At Astbury Wren we discuss all aspects of risk management with our clients as part of our review process.
